With the slowdown of the Classic series, there was a concern that VPI wouldn’t have a product that would have that wood or background furniture look. Having had the Prime as a staple product unchanged for the past two years, we didn’t want to modify the product but rather have an additional option open for the customer who favors that wood/walnut look. This brought us to the Prime in walnut finish. It is still the same composite material with a vinyl wrap but has the look of something you would find on the set of Mad Men.
What better time to show the new finish than with our new Colorado Dealer Fort Collins Audio at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest? We teamed up with KEF, with the Blade 2s (next speakers on the wish list), Parasound, Kimber Cable, and Ortofon. What was most enjoyable for me was meeting Fort Collins Audio owner Don Walker for the first time. I was blown away by his genuine curiosity and appreciation for our products. What started out to be a simple set-up turned into a full on seminar. He wanted to know all about our line and the proper ways to calibrate your VPI turntable. First, we discussed matching cartridges. We decided that the Ortofon Quintet Black continues to be a great match for the Prime. We went over everything from unboxing, to what is in the box, our best practices, and how to dial in that extra 5% to get the sound you’re looking for in your system.
To top it all off, we had the pleasure of demonstrating with Johan Coorg and Dipin Sehdev from KEF who gave a fantastic demonstration of digital versus vinyl. Johan cued up the same songs on vinyl and on high-res digital and switched back and forth for the audience showing that, while the digital was more convenient, the audience started tapping their foot and having a bit more of a smile when the Prime was playing. It was especially exciting to have Mr. Coorg perform this demonstration because his product is at the end of the chain and it showed how drastic a difference the rest of that chain could have on the presentation of speakers.
Overall, it was great to meet Don and see Richard from Parasound. As for Dipin and Johan from KEF, it was a nice warm up for our big presentation yet to come at TAVES!
