It was a fun road trip down to Maryland this past weekend to visit our friends at Furnace Record Pressing! This has been a trip long time coming since Capital Audiofest when we first talked to Eric Astor, owner of Furnace about taking a factory tour. Visiting Furnace with the rest of the VPI staff has become the number one priority on our next visit to Maryland! Furnace is a fine oiled machine of organization, production, and vinyl spinning in ever room! With no shortage of records on hand, it was also exciting to see them keeping it clean on a VPI HW 16.5.
Opening the door to the production floor presented a sea of Metallica tempted the idea of backing up the truck and seeing how many boxes of records we could run off with before Eric noticed! The Furnace team is innovative and collaborative in their lean approach to production. There was also a lot of history to the building and how Furnace has evolved over the years, from a re-purposed recording room, re-purposed CD room, and more. Part of the tour was getting a closer look at the ten Toolex Alpha Record pressing machines they found and bought. You can read more about their presses in Michael Fremer’s Analogue Planet Report.
The trifecta of audio! Owner of VPI Mat Weisfeld, owner of Soundstagedirect.com Seth Frank, and owner of Furnace Record Pressing Eric Astor.
